Map outlining the Director Districts
People just like you serve on the South Plains Electric Cooperative Board of Directors. One of the basic qualifications for serving on the board is you have to buy your electricity from the Cooperative. The other qualifications are outlined in this article.
Your electric Cooperative is a democratically-controlled business. It doesn’t have stockholders, so the board isn’t made up of the people who own the most shares and are looking for big returns on their investment. Your Cooperative is governed by local people with your best interest and the Cooperative’s best interest at heart.
Districts 4, 6, 9 and 11 will be electing directors this year. The director election process includes the following:
• The Cooperative Board appoints nominating committees for each district with expiring director terms.
• Nominating committee meetings are held in the respective districts.
• Nominating committees select director candidates.
• Nominations by petition will also be accepted by a specific deadline date.
• A secret ballot vote will be conducted at the membership meeting corresponding with the district for election.
• The declared winner for each district will be presented to the Cooperative membership for ratification at the September 13, 2011, annual meeting.
• Ratified candidates will take office upon the adjournment of the September 13 meeting.
This general outline should help you follow and participate in the director election process. If you are interested in a board position and want more information, please call Cheryl Wampler at (806) 775-7856 or e-mail her at cwampler@SPEC.coop.
